Community Service

The Superintendent will implement a process to recognize student achievement in community service.

Certificates of Merit

A certificate of merit program awards students gold, silver or black “certificates” for completing certain numbers of hours for volunteer community service. Hours are to be accumulated annually and reported to the high school career center. Students will keep a written log through the MHS Career Center. All hours must be verifiable.

Logging Hours

Students will be required to submit documented evidence of their community service effort. A form will be provided through the MHS Career Center. The nature and duration of volunteer work is to be documented by students and verified by both an organization representative and a parent. Signatures will suffice in documenting participation. Students will submit their form to the Career Center where the approved community service hours will be recorded and stored in each student portfolio.

Recognition

Three levels of recognition will be based on the number of hours students engage in community service over their entire time enrolled in Meridian High School. Students will receive annual recognition at an awards event and be encouraged to use their community service hours as evidence of strong character and civic involvement on their resumes, scholarship and job applications.

Community Service Certificates of Merit

Students who engage in at least 500 hours of documented and confirmed community service activities will receive a Gold Certificate of Merit.

Students who engage in at least 250 hours of documented and confirmed community service activities will receive a Silver Certificate of Merit.

Students who engage in at least 100 hours of documented and confirmed community service activities will receive a Bronze Certificate of Merit.
