Last year we introduced our new strategic plan called Our Commitments. The plan was created in partnership with staff, families, students and our community. Our Commitments has five core values: belonging, communication, support, wellness and learning. As we move through the school year we will hear from different people about what these values mean to them.

Robert Kratzig, assistant principal at Meridian Middle School

Why is communication important?

“Communication is an important part of the work we do at Meridian because educating kids is a partnership. Making communication consistent, timely, and relevant to families improves the relationships we have with them. It’s essential that our families know what is happening at school and are able to have an avenue to share back-and-forth with their child’s teacher in a way that supports learning goals. Talking with families about their students and working together with them to support and teach has been one of my favorite parts of this role.”

Alicia Roberts, family services coordinator, and Elvira Trautman, cultural liaison

Alicia Roberts and Elvira TrautmanWhat does support mean to you?

“We are here to help families so they don’t feel like they have to do everything alone. We work together with families, students, staff and the community to provide resources so that families have what they need and their students can succeed in school and life.”

“Estamos aquí para ayudar a las familias, para que no sientan que tienen que hacer todo solos. Trabajamos en conjunto con familias, estudiantes, personal de la escuela y la comunidad para proveer recursos, de tal manera que las familias obtengan lo necesario y sus estudiantes puedan tener éxito en la escuela y en su vida en general.”

Nate Beede, assistant principal at Irene Reither Elementary

Nate BeedeWhy is belonging important?

“Belonging is so important because when we feel and know that we belong, we can enter into the learning process with our full potential. When students, staff and families know they can be who they are, their authentic selves each day, we are able to accomplish more together.”

Laura Lupo, mental health coordinator

Laura LupoWhat does wellness mean to you?

“When we hear the word wellness, we tend to think of physical well-being but mental health is just as important. Prioritizing wellness (balancing physical, mental, and emotional well-being) leads to a more fulfilling and satisfying life. This allows us to thrive in all areas of our life, including connection with others, reducing stress, and anxiety, enhancing self-awareness, and having healthy relationships. I love that the strategic plan specifically promotes student and staff well-being.” – Laura Lupo, mental health coordinator
