This is a continuation of our Meet Meridian series focusing on our students. We have launched into middle school!
Raeann, eighth grader at Meridian Middle School
“I like art and PE. It’s like a break in the day for me. In art, we’re starting with paper mache. We’re making sculptures and you can make whatever sculpture you want. I like the creativity that we have in art class. In PE, we’re doing basketball. I’ve played basketball for a long time and I also do wrestling.
I started middle school during COVID and we didn’t get to see our friends as much. Seeing everyone and talking to each other makes school more fun. People aren’t scared to talk to each other like they were during COVID.
It is easier to get help when you’re in school and there are other kids to talk to when you need help. We help each other out when we need it.”
Keladry, seventh grader at MP3
“I like learning about history because it’s really fun talking about the past. My family grew up talking to me about where my family was from and what life was like for them. I think that’s what got me really interested in learning about history. It makes you feel more welcome, you don’t feel like you stand alone. When you read about history, especially if you’re learning about where you came from, you learn a lot about yourself and your past. It can be really interesting.
I like MP3 because it’s a diverse school and a really safe place. The teachers are willing to change the way they teach you something, they’re not just going off one concrete thing. You can tell how much effort they put into doing what they’re doing.
Our curriculums for our on-campus days and home days are separate. A lot of times we have projects that help us work with whatever we’re doing at home. Like in tech class last year, we learned how to use slides, which is just a helpful skill overall.
You get a lot of experiences at MP3, there are times when I get to go help teach first graders and you get a lot of really good first-hand experiences. Instead of being told how the world works you get to kind of experience it more. We do a lot of hands-on stuff, I think it’s much easier to apply myself to what I’m doing when it’s hands-on.”
Oliver, seventh grader at Meridian Middle School
“I like jazz band. I play the alto saxophone. I like jazz band because it uses your brain for like improv and just making your own music. That’s fun.
Next year in eighth grade band, and when you’re older, you get more opportunities to do more stuff like play at the football games.
When I was younger I would always think about how I can’t wait until I’m in middle school and here I am in middle school and time passes by really fast. In middle school, you have to put more work into it than you would actually expect. But once you do, good results come out and you turn out to be actually doing fine.
There’s a lot more people that you get to meet because of the big environment, there’s all different classes and you don’t just stay in the same one. You get mixed up with people so you get to meet a whole bunch of new people.”
