Dear MMS Families,

Next week is the final week of school for the calendar year 2023 and the last few days before winter break.  When we return in January, there are just four weeks (three of which are only 4 days long) left until the end of first semester.  Our return in January is a great time to check your student’s grades on Skyward and contact teachers with any concerns.  We would love to partner with you to help your student finish strong.

As the counselors have spoken about a few weeks ago and again in their message below, the holidays can bring about a variety of emotions for students.  While others may be excitedly looking forward to the break, others are likely less enthusiastic about losing their routine and not seeing friends for a few weeks.  It’s a great time to check in with your child this weekend to see how they’re feeling, and to talk with them about how others may not necessarily feel the same as they do.

As always, let us know if you have any questions or concerns!

GO TROJANS!

-Robert Kratzig, Assistant Principal

COUNSELING CORNER
MMS Families,

As we approach the final week of the calendar year, the counseling team wanted to share some insights and tips to help navigate this transitional time. The last week of the year can bring about a mix of emotions for students, and we want to ensure a smooth and positive experience for everyone.

The end of the year often marks a time of transition and reflection for students. As they approach the well-deserved winter break, it’s not uncommon to see changes in behaviors, both at school and at home. These changes may include increased excitement, restlessness, or a drop in focus and motivation.

Tips for a Positive Transition:

  • Communication is Key:
    • Encourage open communication with your child about their feelings and expectations for the upcoming break.
    • Discuss any anxieties or concerns they may have about the transition.
  • Establish Consistency:
    • Maintain consistent routines both at school and at home to provide a sense of stability.
    • Emphasize the importance of completing school assignments and tasks before the break.
  • Set Realistic Expectations:
    • Help your child set realistic expectations for the last week of school and the upcoming break.
    • Discuss plans for both rest and enjoyable activities to maintain a healthy balance.
  • Celebrate Achievements:
    • Acknowledge and celebrate your child’s achievements throughout the year, no matter how big or small.
    • Reflect on their growth and positive moments, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment.
  • Address Challenges Proactively:
    • If you notice changes in behavior, address them proactively by talking with your child and seeking additional support if needed.
    • Reach out to the counseling team if you have concerns or need guidance on supporting your child during this time.

Our counseling team is here to support both students and families as we navigate the last week of the year together. If you have any questions, concerns, or if you feel your child may benefit from additional support, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are committed to creating a positive and supportive environment for all.

Wishing you a joyful end to the year and a rejuvenating winter break!

Warm regards,

MMS Counseling Team

Accepting Highly Capable Referrals

We are accepting referrals for the highly capable program. Highly capable students are those who perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced academic levels when compared with others of their age, experiences, or environments. Teachers and parents may refer any student in grades K-11 for assessment.

To refer a student for assessment, please complete the Highly Capable referral form by Dec. 13, 2023, for eligibility in the 2024-25 school year.

If you have questions about the Highly Capable Program visit our website or contact Rebecca Montgomery, Highly Capable Program Coordinator, at 360-318-2456.

Lost & Found

We have amassed quite a collection of jackets, sweatshirts, shorts, pants, shoes, water bottles, and lunchboxes in our Lost & Found.  If your child is missing something, please have them take a look at the display or stop by during school hours to check yourself.  All items from the lost and found will be donated prior to Winter Break – so don’t miss your chance to reclaim lost items!

Summer Enrichment Scholarships

The Assistance League of Bellingham (ALB) is thrilled to announce the Enrichment Scholarship Program (ESP) for the 2023-2024 school year. From December 1, 2023, to February 16, 2024, your child can download scholarship application packets from the ALB website. Ensure the letter of recommendation form is submitted with the application. Each student is eligible for one scholarship, even if the full amount isn’t utilized. While the summer program choice isn’t required at the application stage, it should be finalized by March 29, 2024. ALB provides a helpful sample scoring rubric and a checklist to guide students. This year, there’s an impressive $55,000 available for scholarships. Encourage your child to seize this opportunity to broaden their horizons. Visit the ALB website for more details. Don’t let your child miss out on this chance to shine!
