Trojan family,
We’ll keep it short this week and only say – we hope that your family is able to enjoy some quality time together over the coming week. There are just 8.5 weeks remaining in the school year after Spring Break, and we hope this will give everyone the opportunity to rest up in order to finish strong!
As always, let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Go Trojans!
Mr. Doffing, Principal
Mr. Kratzig, Assistant Principal

Club Recognition – Global Connections

This past week was Global Connections Recognition Week! Global Connections is one of the largest clubs Meridian has to offer with around 20 members! The club is made up of 3 main organizations: the Sikh Student Federation, Hispanic United, Slavic United, and many smaller groups. Each organization has been able to achieve many projects to support and spread awareness of their respective community. Some of the projects that Hispanic United has done are reading books in Spanish during the Give Before You Get at IRE and doing a musical performance. The Sikh Student Federation has been able to achieve many projects as well. Some projects the federation has done are provide books in Punjabi to the Meridian library, organize a meeting with the world affair council located in Seattle, discuss the Sikh holiday of Char Sahibzada at the elementary school, and plan a performance of gatka during the culture fair.
STAMP

World Language Proficiency Exam

The World Language Proficiency Exam assesses reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, offering students the opportunity to earn up to 4 high school credits. The STAMP test covers languages like Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, and more (includes all four skills), while the STAMP WS test is available for languages like Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Punjabi (focuses on writing and speaking). Both exams are computer-based and take 1–4 hours.
Contact Mrs. Shuvalova to register and for more details. Don’t miss this great chance to showcase your language skills!

Bond Information: How would a 5-8 middle school work?

By 2028, Irene Reither Elementary (IRE) is projected to have over 1,000 students, exceeding its capacity of 726. The Facilities Task Force, recognizing the need for a new Meridian Middle School due to its condition and future overcrowding, recommended rebuilding it as a 5-8 school. This will alleviate overcrowding at IRE by moving about 160 students to a new middle school, which will be designed with input from parents, staff, students, and the community.
Adding capacity at Meridian Middle School is more cost-effective than building a new elementary school, which would cost about $50 million. The task force’s recommendation addresses both the need for a new middle school and the overcrowding at IRE. These videos provide more details on these topics.

Spring State Assessments Begin Soon

Spring state assessments for students will begin soon. These assessments help us measure student progress.
  • Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) will be used for English Language Arts (ELA) and math in grades 9 and 10. Grade 9 is an “interim” assessment and will not generate a report for families. Grade 10 is the official assessment and will generate a report for families.
  • Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) will be used for science in grade 11.
The results from these assessments will provide valuable information for both the school and families. They help us improve instructional practices, gauge student progress and identify areas where additional support may be needed. For grade 10 students, the Smarter Balanced assessments can also serve as a graduation pathway. Results are typically available in Skyward by September each year.
How you can help:
  • Ensure your child arrives at school on time each day during testing.
  • Encourage your child to get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast before testing.
  • Most students will take the assessments online using their Chromebooks. Please remind your child to come to school with their Chromebook fully charged.
For additional information about state testing:
If you have any questions about the state assessments, please contact your school.

From our Substance Abuse Intervention Specialist

How to Talk to Your Teen About Substance Use

From Izzy Griffin, Substance Abuse Intervention Specialist
Starting conversations with adolescents can be challenging, especially surrounding sensitive topics such as substance use. For kids, this topic can tend to lead to defensiveness, dishonesty due to fear of reactions, and/or avoidance. For adults, this can often bring up feelings of frustration, worry, and a desire to help. When having conversations, reflect on your intentions beforehand: Are you seeking to… understand? Discipline your child? Express your feelings of worry or frustration?
Understanding your goal before the conversation can help ensure your message is clear, reducing misunderstandings and negative reactions. Creating a safe space for these conversations is all about trust, patience, and ensuring they feel truly heard. Some helpful ideas of ways to approach conversations include:
  • Stay calm and avoid reacting with only anger or fear, as it may discourage open communication.
  • Emphasize your concern for their well-being rather than only focusing on their actions.
  • Use open-ended questions to explore their reasons and perspective.
  • Instead of asking, “Why did you do this?”, try “Can you help me understand what led to this?”
  • Acknowledge their emotions while reinforcing that the behavior is not acceptable.
  • Example: “I hear that you’re feeling stressed, and I understand why you might have tried this, but it’s still not safe.”
  • Ensure that any consequences are fair, relevant, and enforceable, such as loss of privileges or added responsibilities.
  • Provide opportunities for them to regain your trust over time.
Disciplinary conversations are also sometimes necessary, and having a foundation of trust can make them more effective. When kids believe that consequences come from love and support rather than judgment or criticism, they are more likely to accept and respond to them, even if they feel upset or frustrated. It’s important to reinforce that love includes accountability, honesty, and, at times, consequences that help guide their growth and learning.
