Dear Meridian High School Community,

I hope this message finds you well as we embark on a special and culturally significant time of the year. It is my pleasure to acknowledge and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th to October 15th.

Hispanic Heritage Month is a wonderful opportunity for us to honor the rich traditions, history, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx individuals to our nation and our school community. This month, we come together to recognize the diverse cultures, languages, and talents that make our school community so vibrant and inclusive.

It is essential that we continue to build an inclusive and diverse learning environment, where all cultures are celebrated, and all voices are heard. Hispanic Heritage Month is just one of many occasions for us to come together and strengthen our bonds as a community.

Thank you for your continued support, and let us embrace this month with enthusiasm and a commitment to learning from one another.

Washington State Healthy Youth Survey 2023

MHS is participating in the Washington State Healthy Youth Survey (HYS) during fall 2023. Students in all four grades will complete the survey on Monday, October 30, 2023.
The HYS includes questions related to physical activity and diet, unintentional and intentional injury, substance use, sexual behaviors, abuse, risk and protective factors, and access to school-based services. Survey results are used by schools, communities, and state agencies to plan programs to support our youth and reduce their risks.

Students and families can also review the questions on the HYS by opening the link below.
Participation in the survey is voluntary and the students’ answers are anonymous. There are no codes or information used to match a survey to a student.  Students can opt out of the survey.  More information for how to opt out will be shared later this month.
Whatcom Community College Running Start Students

Winter  quarter enrollment begins on October 26th.  Make an appointment soon with your school counselor to have your enrollment verification form signed.

Homecoming Dress Up Days

It’s Homecoming Week!  The dress up days for the week are listed below.

Monday:  ‘Merica Monday (reds, whites, blues)
Tuesday:  Dynamic Duos (any pairing or “more”-ing works, including twinning)
Wednesday:  “On Wednesday We Wear Pink”
Thursday:  Country vs. Country Club (jeans/boots, etc. vs. golf course attire)
Friday:  Shades All Day
A Tangled Homecoming

The MHS Homecoming Dance is Saturday, October 14th in MHS Commons from 8:00pm-11:00pm.  Homecoming is a semi formal event.  Tickets will be on sale at the ASB window this week for $10.00 each.  Tickets will not be sold at the door! So, make sure you get yours by the of the week.

Thriving Futures! Connecting our Commitments at MHS

You are invited to Thriving Futures! Connecting our Commitments, our monthly engagement series with Superintendent Dr. James Everett.  The next meeting is Monday, October 9th from 5:45pm-6:45pm in the MHS Library.

During each meeting Dr. Everett shares district updates and also provides an opportunity for questions and discussion.  Mr. Forbes, Principal at MHS, will be joining the meeting this week.  They will be sharing school and district updates, discuss the ongoing work of our strategic plan and share an update about the Whatcom County Skills Center and Whatcom Early Learning Center.

Everyone is welcome to attend.  Light refreshments will be provided.

District Wide Food Drive Concludes This Week

Meridian School District is hosting a districtwide food drive from Monday, Oct. 2 through Friday, Oct. 13 to support families in our community. Donation boxes will be available on all school buses, in school offices and at the District Office. Food will be donated to the Meridian Family Support Center, Ferndale Food Bank and Project Hope in Lynden.

We are collecting nonperishable and unexpired foods such as canned soup, canned vegetables or fruit, pastas, canned beans, cereals, rice, flour, cooking oils, peanut butter, canned chicken and tuna.

MHS History Moment

In 1950 at MHS …….

  • 8th graders attended MHS
  • The Future Homemakers of American organization was started
  • The boys basketball team competed in the district tournament for the 2nd time in school history. Students and Community members would pack the gymnasium for home or away games. They would arrive for games at 5:00pm to be guaranteed a seat.
  • The chemistry lab was improved.
  • The following items were also added to the school: a film strip projector, a tape recorder, black boards, a bulletin board, new tables in the Ag hall, new typewriters, a mimeoscope, the girl’s locker room got baskets to use as lockers, the library got a new card catalog and new books, a new school bus and a girl’s sick room.
  • The district also began to clear land to prepare for the growth of the school.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day, October 9th

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October, on October 9th this year, to honor the cultures and histories of the Native American people.  The day is centered around reflecting on their tribal roots and the tragic stories that hurt but strengthened their communities.
