This is a continuation of our Meet Meridian series focusing on our students. Welcome to high school!

Dulce, sophomore at Meridian High School

“So far everything is going well. My grades are good and I like all of my classes. Everyone here is so nice. The teachers take the time to help you and make sure you’re doing ok. Everyone makes you feel welcome. The people here make the school special. All of the staff and the teachers are really nice and helpful. This is a place where people make sure you feel welcome and that you belong. It is just a really nice place to be.

I plan to go to a four-year college. I’ve always wanted to be a doctor since I was little. That’s still my plan. Here they teach you how to be responsible. You have different electives you can choose from that will help you prepare for different jobs. I think the different opportunities the school offers, it gives you the materials you need to build your own path and they just help you throughout.”

Kiana, senior at Meridian High School

Kiana “I got into leadership class my sophomore year and I’ve been in it ever since. It definitely has changed me. I’m so different from freshman year to now. I think leadership has made me a way more outgoing and not so shy kind of person. I was always nervous to speak to anyone and now I feel like, look at me now!

I could never see myself going to any other high school but here. I think I’m just so attached to this area. I’ve never been out of this area. I cannot imagine going to another school.
Our school is super, super small. Like small in a way where everyone knows everyone. I know everyone says this. So I feel like this isn’t new, but legit, everyone knows everyone.

I just think it’s a really nice school. As much as I can complain sometimes. You’ll see me in class and I’m like, I joke that I don’t want to be here and say I hate coming to school, but really I don’t. I definitely don’t. I think high school has shaped me to be the person that I am today and I’m gonna be proud to come back and be like, I’m an alumni!

After high school, I’m really hoping to go into psychology, maybe to major in that or something in human services. I’d like to work in an area like counseling or therapy. I just want to help other people, so I’m looking into that. I just don’t know where I want to go to college yet but I know I want to cheer in college.”

Piper, freshman at Meridian High School

Piper“My advice to incoming ninth graders is to not worry about your schedule. It’ll be fine and you’ll figure it out. High school is not as bad as you think it’s gonna be and the teachers are much nicer than you may think. Everyone has been very welcoming and tried to make the transition to ninth grade as easy as possible.

For classes, I like ceramics and strangely, I like math a lot this year. I like ceramics because you get to do a lot of independent work and Mr. Holz trusts you to be able to do it, but you can ask for help if you need it. So it’s like you can do it on your own but you also have help there.

I like math because it’s more structured around groups than it has been before. I never really liked math. It’s just not my favorite subject, but I like the way the class is structured and how you can get help from your group and the teacher. It’s nice.

I do think that high school is preparing me for the future. I don’t really have an idea of what I want to do yet, but I think that’s nice. I can keep my options open and figure it out as I go along and I can learn new things.”
