Every Thursday before school at Irene Reither Elementary School, fifth graders eagerly gather for eSports club, an initiative led by multilingual learner specialist Twan Mathijssen and third grade teacher Glenn DePeratla. This club is more than just about gaming; it’s about fostering a strong sense of belonging, which is a core value of our strategic plan.

As the club powers up each Thursday, students huddle together and Mr. Mathijssen sets the tone for the day, emphasizing the values of sportsmanship, the grace of losing, and the humility of winning. Now in its first full year, the club has about 25 students attending regularly.

Mr. Mathijssen notes the excitement among the kids, with some even showing improved attendance on Thursdays. He highlights the importance of having students in school, not just for academic success but for building meaningful connections with peers and staff, aligning with our goal of creating an inclusive environment where every student feels they belong.

The club offers a selection of age-appropriate games, including FIFA Soccer, Mario Kart, Minecraft and Rocket League. Fifth grade teachers generously opened their classrooms for the club, allowing students to rotate between rooms and choose their favorite games.

Mr. Mathijssen loves witnessing the interactions and teamwork that unfold during the club. “Some parents worry about increased screen time, and I understand those concerns. But here, kids are collaborating, honing their social and communication skills. Many games require teamwork to succeed, making them excellent tools for developing essential life skills. Plus, it’s a lot of fun.”

The eSports club is a game-changer creating a sense of belonging at Irene Reither Elementary, ensuring everyone feels like part of the team.
