Principal’s Message
IRE Families,
We are looking forward to spending time with everyone this coming week with conferences. This time to meet, share progress, and set goals is a huge part of your child’s growth. Partnership between families and school can have some of the largest impact on kids’ lives. As always, please arrange for your child to leave during our dismissal time. We are unable to accommodate supervising students until their conference.
As we honor Black History Month this February, we celebrate the deep and meaningful contributions of Black individuals to our nation and local communities. This is a wonderful opportunity to engage our children in meaningful conversations about history, diversity, and the importance of inclusion. Locally, we shared about Dr. John Utendale last year, who was the first black player to sign an NHL contract.
This year, we encourage families to check out some book recommendations to read with your family that may be meaningful for elementary-aged children:
  • When the Schools Shut Down – A young girl’s experience during the fight for school integration after Brown v. Board of Education.
  • Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race – An inspiring introduction to the Black women who helped NASA launch astronauts into space.
  • Ron’s Big Mission by Rose Blue – The true story of Ron McNair, a future astronaut who, as a child, fought for his right to borrow books from the library.
  • The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis – A mix of humor and history, this novel follows a Black family’s road trip to Birmingham during a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement.
Lastly, we have had a date change with our 100th day celebration due to the snow days. See details below.
Best,
Tyler Dockins, Principal

The 100th Day of School is Almost Here!
We are thrilled to celebrate the 100th Day of School at Irene Reither Elementary on Wednesday, February 12th! To mark this special milestone, we invite all students to join in the fun by dressing up as if they are 100 years old!
Students can get creative with their outfits—think gray hair, glasses, canes, slippers, and anything else that might make them look like they’ve been around for a century!
As we celebrate, we also want to remind everyone to do so with kindness and respect toward our elders. This is a great opportunity to honor and appreciate the wisdom and experiences of those who have lived for 100 years or more!
We can’t wait to see all the creative and respectful outfits on this special day!

We want to hear from you!
We are committed to continuously improving our school district and providing the best education for all our students. To do that, we need your feedback!
Please take a few minutes to complete our annual survey. Your insights will help us identify key areas to focus on, ensuring we deliver the highest quality education. This survey is also crucial for tracking our progress towards the goals outlined in Our Commitments, our strategic plan.
We want to hear your thoughts on various topics, including school communication, learning expectations, and your interactions with teachers and administrators. The survey is available in multiple languages.
Please complete the survey by March 7.
Conferences
Teachers have shared their conference sign ups, please sign up so that we can discuss your child’s progress and partner with you for future growth areas. Our goal is 95% of families attend or higher.
At IRE, we’ve put a lot of thought into what makes a conference meaningful and impactful. Here’s what you can expect:
  • Clear Agenda: Designed with input from families and students to ensure a focused and productive discussion.
  • Student-Led Component: Your child will actively participate, sharing their reflections and growth.
  • Evidence-Based Conversations: Grounded in student work, assessments, and academic milestones.
  • Supportive Resources: Strategies and tools will be provided to help continue learning at home.
  • Academic Overview: A clear picture of progress and next steps.
  • Follow-Up Plan: A shared plan to keep your child supported and thriving.
Additionally, counselors will be around during conferences if there are any concerns that you would like to share about changes in your student’s life.

February Safety Drill
In February, IRE students and staff will be practicing a LOCKDOWN Drill. The following is an example of how we explain a LOCKDOWN Drill to our IRE students:
A LOCKDOWN will be called if there is something dangerous happening inside our building. We might LOCKDOWN if there is a dangerous animal inside our school. We might LOCKDOWN if there is a dangerous person inside our school. Sometimes we might LOCKDOWN if there is a report of a dangerous weapon inside our school.
Schools in our county use the Standard Response Protocol from iloveuguys.org.  You can learn more about the protocol here.
