Principal’s Message
IRE Families, As we approach our last week before winter break, we are having students celebrate a spirit week with a number of fun dress up days. Please take some time to chat as a family about how you’d like to dress up. Additionally, we have some amazing work happening with writing across our entire school. Instructionally, as a school we are focusing on informational writing this quarter where students are learning about everything from bugs,, animals and weather systems. As students work on their informational reading and writing, we encourage students to reflect on a specific set of criteria when engaging in their writing. Below, you’ll see a picture of a student self-assessing their work against a list of qualities for their writing from one of our Kindergarten classes. Additionally, we asked a few questions to a fourth grader in a recent observation to see how students think about their work. You’ll notice that our students are internalizing the importance of reflecting on what makes a great piece of information writing and why it is important. Pretty exciting stuff!
Questions to ask your students about their Writing Work:
– What are you writing about in your class?
– Why is it important to learn how to write about information that you research about?
– What is your favorite part of writing?
Questions asked to Fourth Grade Student in Ms. Shipman’s class:
What are you learning about?
We are learning about sea turtles and their physical characteristics
Why is this important?
First, I really love turtles. Also, we learn about their physical characteristics and how they help animals survive.
How do you know if you are successful?
Because if I include this information on my paper [points to prewriting work], and if we have all of these [points to a list of qualities that they are working on].
