Principal’s Message
There has been some amazing academic work going on in the building over the past week. Our classrooms are into full swing with their literacy blocks, where we take a balanced approach at working on foundational reading skills (e.g. phonics, phonemic awareness, etc.), building our independent reading skills, and working on narrative writing across the school. Last week, we highlighted our new phonics supplement UFLI. Last year, we adopted Heggerty, a phonemic awareness curriculum. It is not a core curricular component; however it is a quick-paced, 12 minute lesson that is given daily to build a student’s phonemic awareness. Learning this skill is important because it helps students notice how letters represent sounds, it gives readers a way to approach sounding out new words, and helps them understand that letters in words are systematically represented by sounds. Check out a quick video of one of our rockstar kindergarten teachers in the middle of their Heggerty routine, Ms. Jessica Castaneda. (It is less than 30 seconds of video, it’s worth a quick look) Additionally, Irene Reither Elementary will be celebrating World Cerebral Palsy Day by wearing GREEN on Wednesday, October 11th. We have some words shared down below by an IRE family who would like to share their child’s story. Also, her family would like to share some resources and tools on knowing how to act when you see someone who has a disability in our community. Please join us in wearing GREEN on Wednesday, October 11th! Lastly, we practiced our evacuation drill this week. We’re proud of how quickly over 750 students were able to evacuate the building. For safety, we follow similar protocols and language with all of the schools within our district. If you have students at the middle or high school, these protocols will sound familiar. Further, many of the schools in the county share the same language in coordination with our first responders as well (this approach is called Standard Response Protocol). Our next drill will be October 19th on the International Great Shakeout Day, where many schools and businesses across the world practice how to respond in the event of an earthquake. See below about our safety protocols below.

Common Sense Media announces Digital Citizenship Week: October 16-20!
Since the beginning of the year our students have been introduced to our digital friends through Common Sense Media. Each week we cover a lesson geared toward online safety, awareness, kindness and overall Digital Citizenship while using a device. From TK to 5th grade, our students are learning and reminded of valuable lessons and expectations regarding how to use their devices safely and how to keep themselves safe while having fun.
Next week is a great reminder for our parents and families on how we can help our students through reminders, perhaps through the use of Go Guardian and following our other safety routines. Ask your student how they stay safe online and should treat their device. I bet they can teach all of us a thing or two! We will continue our lessons in Common Sense Media for the next few weeks while discovering many new and fun educational tools available to our students. It has been a great start to our year in the tech lab and I am so proud of the way our students are following those expectations. If you would like to check out some of our Common Sense Media lessons and meet our Digital friends, feel free to check it out! https://www.commonsense.org/education/digital-citizenship/curriculum?grades=k%2C1%2C2
