Principal’s Message

IRE Families!
The first two months of the school year are nearly at the end. There has been so much hard work and learning happening within the school and so much progress to share. Next week, we will start to share more about that progress via our progress reports. Remember that progress reports are about progress toward standards that typically become mastered by the end of the year. Teachers will be reaching out once those are published to learn how to read those progress reports and families will be able to access them online.
Additionally, we have seen a lot of progress with teaching students about their Social-Emotional skills with our collective approach using the 2nd Step Curriculum. This past month had the lowest average of office referrals per day from the past few years. Proactive instruction around how to handle conflict and manage emotions has led to fewer incidents between students. We averaged around 6 referrals per day and now average around 4. This is pretty significant in a school of over 700 students.
As mentioned in our last newsletter, at IRE, we ask that families keep Halloween candy at home. We have a process in place for all food, snacks, and candy with classroom celebrations to keep our students safe. Many of our students have peanut, gluten and other food allergies, some can be life threatening. Thank you for honoring our food policy.

Lastly, as a school we do not collectively celebrate Halloween. Some of our families celebrate it and some do not. If students want to wear costumes or dress up because it is an important holiday for them, it is perfectly acceptable. Students can dress up for any important day, their birthday or holiday as long as what students are wearing does not become a major distraction from learning. As always, we do not allow masks, gore, scary items or weapons at school any day of the year.

Best,

Tyler Dockins, Principal

Parent Pick-Up Line                                                                       alt_text
If you arrive before 3:30 to pick up your student, please continue to pull around to the gravel lot. This is vital for avoiding gridlock and keeping over 100 cars flowing through our pick up line each day. When a few cars stay parked in front of the school, even for a few minutes, it backs many more cars up behind.

Meridian School Board Recognized as Board of Distinction

Meridian School Board was recognized as a 2023 Board of Distinction by the Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA). This is the first year that our School Board has received this recognition.

Meridian board members are Sara Bernardy, Steve Corwin, Marty Gray, Jarrod Karuza and Craig Mitchell.

Out of 295 school districts, 34 School Boards from around the state were recognized. WSSDA stated that all boards shared a common goal of student success. Each board had to demonstrate their strategies to understand student performance and create an environment that cultivates the success of both students and staff. The Boards of Distinction program began in 2009 and aligns with the Washington School Board Standards.

Congratulating to our School Board on this prestigious honor!
