This March, support for students expanded with mental health professional Jessica Norman-Wells joining Meridian Middle School.
Norman-Wells’ position mirrors mental health professional Roberta Martinelli who is supporting students at Meridian High School. Both of these positions are provided in partnership with NWESD 189. Norman-Wells is available three days per week, but starting next year she will be at Meridian Middle School full-time.
Normal-Wells is trained as a psychologist. For 10 years, she worked in therapy services supporting children and families in different settings. She’s worked in a variety of community health settings, but this is her first opportunity to work in the school setting.
“I am excited to be here because often so much of what kids struggle with happens at school. Being here as part of the school community can help me better serve students,” Norman-Wells said.
Much of Norman-Wells’ experience is working with kids and families, and some areas of her expertise include trauma and neurodevelopment differences such as ADHD and autism.
Middle school is an important and pivotal time in children’s lives and they are often going through many changes socially, emotionally and developmentally. Norman-Wells shared some areas for families to be aware of in regards to their child’s behavior.
“I would really advise parents to watch for the duration of emotional changes their kids are having. It’s actually pretty normal for middle school kids to have a range of strong emotions. However, if it persists and their child is despondent or withdrawn, and not interested in doing the things they normally do, that would be a good indication that there is something serious going on that should be addressed,” Norman-Wells said.
Families or students who are interested in connecting with Norman-Wells can be referred through middle school counselors Kathy Greshock or Brett Muskavage. Services are provided free to students. Norman-Wells expressed her excitement for being at Meridian Middle School and is looking forward to supporting students and families.
“Everyone here has been extremely welcoming and warm, and I’ve been impressed with how on board everyone is with supporting the mental health of students,” Norman-Wells said. “The staff here are dedicated to the wellness of students.”
