Juneteenth

Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans. Juneteenth is on the anniversary of the June 19, 1865, announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas, which was the last state with institutional slavery. The day was made a federal holiday on June 17, 2021.

In recognition of Juneteenth, Ferndale Connect, a program of Ferndale Community Services, launched the Juneteenth Video Project. The video shares the significance and importance of Juneteenth by featuring the reflections of local Black community leaders.

The Meridian Family Support Center will be open this summer on modified hours. The center will be open on Wednesdays from 2 to 6 p.m. beginning June 15. The center will return to regular hours Monday, Aug. 29. Resources include groceries, clothing for both kids and adults and school supplies (as available).
