Office of the Superintendent:

A Message from OSPI Superintendent Chris Reykdal –

Good afternoon education partners,

It is critical that we continue to educate our communities on the vital role local levies play in providing comprehensive services for our students. Even in a post-McCleary world, local levies are essential if we are to provide comprehensive programs and supports that are not funded as part of basic education. We risk losing over $1 billion of those local levies this January. At OSPI, we put forward two bills (SB 6362 and HB 2721) to address this new levy cliff.

OSPI just published a short video to explain the importance of retaining local levies – I hope you will watch it and share it broadly in your communities and with your stakeholders. Please let my team or me know if you have any questions.

Chris

Special Services: (Dr. Carolyn Jenkins, Director of Special Services)

Paraeducators - This week I would like to highlight some of our Meridian School District Special Education Heroes; the paraeducators who work with our students with special needs.

While many of our students who qualify under IDEA only require minimal academic or social/emotional support, there are students who require intensive supports. These services are provided by our amazing team of District special education paraeducators. By working with teachers to determine curriculum modifications and accommodations, these staff members make it possible for students with IEPs to successfully access general education classes. In resource classes, they provided valuable support to students who need re-teaching on new concepts and meeting timelines. In our District's functional/adaptive classrooms, the paraeducators serve our students' academic, social/emotional, transition and personal care needs. Each day, these people make a positive difference in the lives of Meridian School District students. Thank you for all you do to ensure the success of our students!
