2018-19 Calendar Adopted

2018-19 School Calendar

Dear Meridian Community,

Please see the attached new school calendar for the 2018-19 school year which was adopted by the Meridian School District Board of Directors at their last meeting. There are some notable things in the calendar that are different than the current 2017-18 school year calendar.  These are:

  1. The school day has been extended by five (5) minutes each day.
  2. Eight (8) early release days during the school year have been eliminated.
  3. There will be a one-hour late start on Fridays.

These changes result in daily school schedules in 2018-19 that will look like this:

Monday – Thursday                   Friday (Late Start)                   Conferences (Early Release)

MHS 7:55 AM to 2:35 PM          MHS 8:55 AM to 2:35 PM              MHS 7:55 AM to 12:10 PM

MMS 8:10 AM to 2:50 PM          MMS 9:10 AM to 2:50 PM             MMS 8:10 AM to 12:25 PM

IRE    9:00 AM to 3:35 PM          IRE  10:00 AM to 3:35 PM             IRE  9:00 AM to 1:15 PM

Bus SchedulesBus schedules will be adjusted to one hour later for pick up on Fridays and also adjusted to a five minute later drop off every day.  If you have bus transportation questions please check with Transportation Supervisor, Mark Dennis at mdennis@meridian.wednet.edu or at 398-2172.

Reasons for the Changes

  1. There was majority support for this change in the online community survey on this topic completed in January 2017.
  2. A consistent late start on Fridays and eliminating eight (8) early release days provides a more consistent schedule for families. (Beginning with 2018-19 school year now the only early release days will be during conferences, the day before Thanksgiving, the last day of school and for senior presentations at MHS.)
  3. The hour on Friday mornings before students arrive provides staff members a regular, consistent time to work in teams to examine student achievement data, to plan instruction based on achievement data and to collaboratively develop strategies to increase student achievement.  This is in support of the 2018-2023 Strategic Plan goals to improve student achievement.
  4. Adding five minutes to the length of the school day is to keep the District in compliance with the instructional time requirements of the Washington State Board of Education.
