Change in Policy for MHS Weight Room – The Meridian High School weight room is provided by the District for the education and instruction of District students.  Based on guidance from the Washington Risk Management Pool (the District’s insurance provider) the weight room will henceforth be available only to Meridian School District employees and current students.   Members of the public and former students who wish to use District facilities must submit a facility use application to rent the facilities when not in use by students.  However, facility rental of the weight room will not be allowed due the high risk nature of the equipment and potential liability risk to the District.

Communities In Schools Program

In the fall of 2014 Meridian School District began a partnership with Communities in Schools of Whatcom County, an affiliate of the nation's largest dropout prevention organization, to better support at-risk youth and their families. The partnership will provide community connections to services and resources that include:

•    A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult through mentoring and counseling programs
•    A safe place to learn and grow through after-school programs, social and cultural events with parental involvement
•    Health, dental and basic services, such as food and clothing, and supplemental educational programs, such as early childhood learning opportunities
•    Skills and tools to use upon graduation, including career and academic support
•    An opportunity to give back to peers and community through community service

The Mission of Communities in Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. For more information about Communities in Schools visit the website here: Communities in Schools of Whatcom County

This year Meridian welcomes Taylor Lawson and Rachel Ramondetta to Meridian High School. In continuation of the work done by Tirra Seely, Taylor and Rachel have worked to connect Meridian High School with community volunteers to tutor students after school, mentor students, and provide school supplies and basic services such as after school snacks to hard working students. This year Meridian will see the return of the  Peer Mentoring program, the after school Study Center and Tutoring Services, as well as several opportunities for students to receive basic needs, college/career readiness skills, and community service opportunities. Feel free to contact either Taylor or Rachel with any questions about this year’s services or upcoming events.
